To achieve the above, the Holy Spirit gives us certain abilities to participate in the divine nature. These abilities are called Gifts of the Holy Spirit. They are listed in the book of first Corinthians chapters 12 and 14.
Brothers and sisters, I want you to know about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. You know that at one time you were unbelievers. You were somehow drawn away to worship statues of gods that couldn’t even speak. So I want you to know that no one who is speaking with the help of God’s Spirit says, “May Jesus be cursed.” And without the help of the Holy Spirit no one can say, “Jesus is Lord.”
There are different kinds of gifts. But they are all given to believers by the same Spirit. There are different ways to serve. But they all come from the same Lord. There are different ways the Spirit works. But the same God is working in all these ways and in all people.
The Holy Spirit is given to each of us in a special way. That is for the good of all. To some people the Spirit gives a message of wisdom. To others the same Spirit gives a message of knowledge. To others the same Spirit gives faith. To others that one Spirit gives gifts of healing. To others he gives the power to do miracles. To others he gives the ability to prophesy. To others he gives the ability to tell (discerning) the spirits apart. To others he gives the ability to speak in different kinds of languages they had not known before. And to still others he gives the ability to explain what was said in those languages. All the gifts are produced by one and the same Spirit. He gives gifts to each person, just as he decides.
God Loves His church more than we do. He sent us His Holy Spirit without us asking for help. He knew we needed help. The Holy Spirit is like Santa. He has 9 Gifts that He gives to the church as He desires. Every believer had been given these gifts. Some gifts are given according to need as the Spirit sees fit but we all have gifts. When Santa gives gifts to children, some children open their gifts right away others cry for someone to open for them yet still others may not even know that they have gifts but the gifts are there! Especially young ones they need someone to unwrap the gifts for them!
A gift is given without asking. It’s a gift. We don’t pray to receive Spiritual gifts. Instead we should acknowledge the gifts and thank God for them.
After thanking God for the gifts we then need to start using them. But how do we know which gifts each one of us has? Do you ask Santa what gift is inside the gift wrap? Or do you open to see what gift you have been given? You discover your gift when you use it. The Holy Spirit will never whisper to you and say, “I gave you Word of Knowledge”. Instead He looks at us as we unwrap the gift and share our excitement and joy with us.
God is amazing; if you desire a different gift the Holy Spirit can still give you what you desire. Like a child who may cry for a different toy to play with and leave theirs aside, the mother can still go and buy a toy the child desires the most. The Holy Spirit does the same. “Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? Now eagerly desire the greater gifts”, 1 Corinthians 12:30-31. “Keep on pursuing love, and keep on desiring spiritual gifts, especially the ability to prophesy”, 1 Corinthians 14:1.
Feelings are the voice of the flesh. If you are walking by feelings, you are being dominated by the flesh. But the Bible tells us to crucify the flesh. If the flesh is crucified, the voice of the flesh is also to be crucified.
The Holy Spirit is not a “possessive spirit”. He does not take over your body like a demon. He simply inspires you. This makes it difficult for many Christians because they want to feel power! They want to feel Him controlling them. This makes many think they don’t have the gifts of the Holy Spirit. They think they have no power but yet Jesus said you shall receive Power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you (Acts 1:8). There are those who emphasize thet if you have sin in your life you won’t receive the Holy Spirit. That’s not true. Without the Holy Spirit you cannot give up sinning. The world does not know they live in sin until they are convicted by the Holy Spirit. John 16:8 “And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment”. In verse 7 of the same chapter Jesus said, “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you”. We all need the Holy Spirit to help us leave our sins. When He is in us we see sin as bad not as good. When He is in us, He helps us to leave sin; it’s not that we leave sin first. You don’t drive out darkness first then invite the light; No! You bring in light and darkness flees!
One day after a church service a man came to Kenneth Hagin and said, I want you to pray for me. I need something more than what I have.”
BELOW IS THEIR FULL CONVERSATION:
Hagin: First, let’s find out why you need this ‘something more’.
Man: Well, to put me over in life.
Hagin: Oh, then you want me to pray that God would give you something more than what you have to put you over in life, to make you a successful Christian, to give you power, and to help you when you meet the tests and trials of life?
Man: Yes, yes, yes! That’s it!
Hagin: Well, let’s find out what you do have and we will see what we need to pray for that you don’t have. Are you saved?
Man: Yes, Brother Hagin, I was born again eight years ago.
Hagin: Have you ever read where Jesus said, ‘. . . we [My Father and I] will come . . . and make our abode with him? (John 14:23)
Man: Yes, I have
Hagin: And have you received the baptism of the Holy Ghost? Are you filled with the Holy Ghost?
Man: Oh yes, I was filled with the Holy Ghost just one year after I was saved.
Hagin: 1 John 4:4 says “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world”. Did you ever read this scripture?
Man: “Yes, I have read them.”
Hagin: Well, if you are born again and Spirit-filled, you have God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost dwelling in you and living in you [Col. 2:9, 10 Amp.]. And, Brother, there isn’t anything more to get that will put you over in life. If God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost can’t put you over, then you will never get over!”
Man: Well, I know that. But I need power.
Hagin: I thought you said you had the Holy Ghost,” Jesus said, ‘But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you . . .’ [Acts 1:8]. In fact, the Holy Ghost is the Source of all power. If you are filled with the Holy Ghost, you have the potential in you for all the power there is. What you need to do is to learn to cooperate with Him (The Holy Spirit) — the Power Source. You need to learn to walk in the light of what you have. You need to learn to put Him who is in you to work for you.”
Man: But I don’t feel like I have any power.
Hagin: Read Acts 1:8 again, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you. . . .’ Jesus didn’t say a word here about your feeling like it.” Acts 2:4 says, ‘And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues. . . .’ It doesn’t say that they felt like speaking with other tongues. It just says they did it.” By way of illustration, I would rather have a million dollars any time, rather than just to feel like I had it, because you can’t spend what you feel. But you can spend what you have! The same principle works in the spiritual realm. I have had some of the greatest supernatural things happen when I felt no anointing or unction at all. I have had the greatest miracles of healing happen in my ministry when I felt nothing. Why is that so? Because I knew how to put the Greater One to work for me and to stand on God’s Word regardless of feelings.
Every believer has the Holy Spirit dwelling within him, and if he has received the infilling of the Holy Spirit he has also received the power from on High. These truths are a reality, whether we feel like they are or not. The Bible says, “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor. 5:7). We must believe what the Word of God says, regardless of what our feelings tell us.
Feelings are the voice of the flesh. If you are walking by feelings, you are being dominated by the flesh. But the Bible tells us to crucify the flesh. If the flesh is crucified, the voice of the flesh is also to be crucified. You can’t walk by feelings and be a successful Christian, for if you are walking by feelings, then your flesh, not your spirit, is dominating you. And you can’t walk by reason and be a successful Christian either, because reason is the voice of your mind (We will discuss more about the mind and the heart when we discuss how to hear God’s voice). But you can walk by faith and be a successful Christian, because faith is of the Spirit. Walking by faith is letting your spirit man dominate you. Walking by faith is listening to the Voice of the Greater One on the inside of you and walking in line with the Word of God. How do we walk by faith and not by sight? We walk by faith by putting faith in what God has said in His Word. It never pays to walk by sight. It never pays to walk by feelings when God has spoken to us by His Word. We need to believe God’s word over our wisdom. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take”, (Proverbs 3:5-6, NLT).Share
